About Us
Bringing peace to those who need it most
Hi, Human Mom, Teri and Human Dad, Kent here with a little bit about us, our story and this site.
We have been married for almost 39 years and have always been pet lovers. Our first pet was a poodle we secured when we lived in Germany in the 80’s. Over the years we’ve had cats, rescue dogs and an auburn colored Labrador Retriever named Cierra. Cierra came into our lives when our son was 6 and our daughter was 4. She lived until my son’s junior year in college. She was part of the family, and she is still missed to this day.
Two Cierra stories:
When we first brought Cierra home we crate trained her at night, which did not last very long because she was so smart and so well behaved. Our son thought Cierra was his dog, but Cierra knew she belonged to the family. The first night she was
allowed to sleep outside her crate, she slept in our son’s room. The next night when our son called Cierra to go to bed, she went to our daughter’s room to sleep. And she alternated every night until the kids were in high school.
The second story is about a day we spent on the Guadalupe River in Texas. To escape the Texas summer heat we spent a day swimming and cooling ourselves on the river. Now remember Cierra was a retriever and she loved to play fetch. As we stood on the banks of the river, our son skipped a rock on the water’s surface and off to the races Cierra went. Now the Guadalupe is not very deep, about 3 feet in the location we spent the day. As our son’s rock lost momentum and sank to the bottom, Cierra’s furious paddling turned into a dive. Her head disappeared and all you saw was a wagging tail. In full reversal, out pops Cierra with a rock in her mouth.
Now we all gasped because, you see, the Guadalupe is a rocky bottom river as evidenced by each wearing sandals while in the water. There was no way that dog found the rock my son had skipped on the water. And who knows, maybe it was, probably wasn’t, but nonetheless, back to the shore she came, rock in mouth and delivered to my son’s feet. All day, rock throwing, rock retrieving and more laughter filling the air as more people gathered to see what all the commotion was about.
At the end of the day when I called Cierra to get in the car, she did not move. “What’s wrong girl,” we asked? Cierra, for the only time I remember in her long and full life, was completely exhausted. I picked up that 80 pound dog, carried her to the car, laid her on her blanket and she slept the hour ride home. Still exhausted I carried her to our bed where the whole family laid around her, petting her and loving on her. That day and for most of her days, she was at the center of our family.
When Cierra died, it left a huge hole in our hearts and with the kids off at college, Teri and I thought we would never find another dog like Cierra and in all honesty, we were not interested in even trying. It took us almost 6 years before we thought about having another dog in our life and on a whim, I brought home Bexar, to surprise my wife on Valentine’s Day.
To pick Bexar up I had to drive 3 hours away and he was just 12 weeks old. When the breeder brought him to me, it was love at first sight for me but Bexar froze in my arms. Uh oh, I thought, maybe he’s afraid. “Just give him one second,” the breeder said. Sure enough, one sniff, followed by several licks and we were connected. The entire drive home, all three hours, Bexar laid on my left arm as I steered with my right. I did not know it that day but I knew it soon, I had been doodled, which brings us to now.
There is so much violence, cruelty and bad news in our world that we wanted to create a moment of respite from the negativity. Bexar and Buckeye bring us such joy every single day that we want to share that joy. We know if you have a doodle, you know what we mean by being doodled, your life will never be the same. And if you have not been doodled, then follow along and one day you may choose to be doodled.
